The final results of the Team Diabetes project !
total donations raised : $6167.02
The Reykjavik marathon was FANTASTIC !!!! To see what our experience was like, please watch the video below! (it may take a few minutes to load ... please be patient)
Team Diabetes was a great group! We were 60 participants from all around Canada : a minority were diabetic, and a majority were amateur runners. This represents at least $366,000 that was fundraised for the Canadian Diabetes Association! Together we received 60 medals at the Iceland event. This means that, for the first time, everyone reached their personal goal (10k, half marathon of 21k, or full marathon of 42k). Congratulations to the team!
To our good fortune, the day of the marathon (August 18th), the weather was the most beautiful that it had been all week! The sun was shining, the skies were clear, and the temperature hovered around 15 degrees Celsius. Most of the time, I was far away from other runners (the olympic guys just zoomed by) which gave me an opportunity to just enjoy the scenery.
Axel, my #1 supporter, flew to Iceland with me to cheer me on. He had planned to meet me at specific checkpoints around the city by taking shortcuts, but he started the race with me. After a few minutes, he spontaneously decided to try to continue walking with me and ended up doing 23 km at my side…. wearing sandals and a backpack! Incredible!
For the second half of the marathon, I gratefully had the company of my teammate Pat, who is from my home province Saskatchewan. As she has already completed two Honolulu marathons, I relied on her for encouragement and motivation during the last grueling kilometres. With kind words and a gps watch, she kept my pace up to 9.5 minutes per km until the end!
I crossed the finish line after 6 hours, 47 minutes and 36 seconds of power-walking. I have never been so physically and mentally exhausted in my life! I finished second-to-last out of 499 participants that completed the full 42km marathon, and I’m darn proud of it! (1142 people finished the 21k, while 2799 did the 10k)
Thank you to everyone that supported me morally and financially by sending me kind words, sponsoring me, coming to our benefit events, and for donating to the Canadian Diabetes Association! I am extremely grateful for your kindness and generosity!
Together we can cure diabetes!
